As she spoke of her depression-“Everything-every thought, word, movement-was an effort. Everything that once was sparkling now was flat. I seemed to myself to be dull, boring, inadequate, thick-brained, unlit, unresponsive, chill-skinned, bloodless, and sparrow-drab…It seemed as though my mind had slowed down and burned out to the point of being virtually useless.”

~Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, “An Unquiet Mind”

Depressive disorders are serious illnesses that affect a person's mood, concentration, sleep, activity, appetite, social behavior, and feelings. Depressive disorders come in different forms, the most common being major depression (unipolar depression). The symptoms and issues that come with unipolar depression are the same with the depressive phase of bipolar disorder. Major depression, the leading cause of disability in the U.S., affects over 9 million adults in a given year. Despite the disabling effects of depression, it is highly treatable.

Everyone feels sad at times, inexplicably tearful, or just plain down. But when these feelings persist, affecting the way one eats and sleeps, feels about oneself, and thinks about family, friends, and work or school, they may be symptoms of a clinical illness.

“Exercise is one of the most powerful antidepressants you can find. And the anecdotal evidence is all around you.  It raises the levels of endorphins, chemicals in the body that shape our moods, making us feel happy, relaxed, and energetic. Holistic doctors also believe that exercise helps release toxins from the body and relieves anxiety.”
